 Yoga and Meditation Training Course

Applied to Stress and Burnout Contexts

(60hours B-learning)

with Senior Yoga Teacher Gonçalo Correia and Marta Dias

Course Presentation / Background

Burnout syndrome is currently seen as a multidimensional and biopsychosocial phenomenon, which arises from repeated exposure to stress and the perception of the individual's resource depletion in face of the demands of the environment.

It is conceptualized as a result of chronic stress in the workplace that has not been successfully managed and is characterized by three dimensions: a feeling of exhaustion or energy exhaustion; increased mental detachment from work or feelings of work-related negativity or cynicism; reduced professional effectiveness.

In Europe, 25% of workers say they experience occupational stress during all or most of the time they work. A similar proportion report that work affects their health negatively (EU-OSHA & Eu-rofound, 2014). A study published in 2013 – European Opinion Poll on Occupational Safety and Health – reveals that “Portugal is ranked as the third European country with the highest proportion of workers who say that work-related stress is “very common” (28%) , almost double the average in Europe (16%)”. According to the Mental Health at Work Report (2017), three out of five employees (60%) experienced a Psychological Health problem in the previous year due to work. Nearly a third (31%) were diagnosed with a Psychological Health problem. Depression and Anxiety being the most common diagnoses.

More recently, due to the current social circumstances, a study carried out by the National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA) on mental health in times of pandemic, 25.2% of the general Portuguese population has symptoms of burnout. In the age group from 18 to 29, the percentage rises to 31.8%. When focusing on the health area, 32.1% of professionals are exhausted. The consequences of burnout range from personal impact, causing physical and mental illness, as well as interpersonal and even economic impact.

Practices and philosophies such as Yoga and Meditation are now well accepted, recognized and encouraged by the scientific, medical and society in general in the development of emotional skills, self-knowledge and thus contributing to the prevention of psychophysiological breakdown.

It is in this context that this training is inserted, promoting the practice of Yoga and Meditation as an effective non-pharmacological intervention for emotional improvement, promoting balance in stress response systems, in the circumstances and demands of life, as well as in interpersonal relationships.

Every person is unique; some face mental challenges, some physical, and some emotional. Yoga teachers and therapists must know how to teach, guide and adapt the practice, as well as guide the practitioner in a personalized way in situations of stress, risk or burnout already installed. They will be able to receive and support practitioners in any physical and psychological condition, bringing awareness to the immense potential for healing and regeneration that each one has within themselves, not only to treat, but, in the first place, to prevent health problems.

At the end of this training, trainees should be able to identify the signs and symptoms of stress and burnout, recognize the benefits of Yoga and Meditation techniques applied in contexts of stress and burnout, select and implement the appropriate approach to intervene in groups and in individual sessions.

This course requires dedication, study and individual practice.
